Ideas for School Recipe Books

Developing a recipe book is a great way to celebrate the food culture of your school community.

When choosing recipes, consider whether they:

  • Use affordable and easily accessible ingredients.
  • Are based around foods from the five food groups:
    • Bread, cereal, rice and pasta
    • Vegetables
    • Fruit
    • Meat, chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, lentils/beans, nuts and seeds
    • Milk, yoghurt and cheese
  • Feature a variety of fruits and vegetables.
  • Use small amounts of monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats or oils e.g. olive, sunflower or canola oil.
  • Use reduced salt condiments, sauces, stocks or tinned vegetables.
  • Use low-fat dairy products e.g. yoghurt, milk or cheese.
  • In sweet recipes include high fibre ingredients like fruit, wholemeal flour or oats.
  • Celebrate Tasmanian farmers and producers by using local and seasonal produce.
