BBQs and sausage sizzles

BBQs and sausage sizzles are a popular school event.  They can be quick and easy to run and often provide a good profit margin making them a common fundraiser.  By making  a few small changes to the traditional sausage sizzle of white bread and tomato sauce you can provide an opportunity for your school community to enjoy a wide range of tasty foods, while role modelling a whole school approach to healthy eating. .

Top tips:

  • Alongside sausages offer some lean meat options such as chicken breasts, minute steaks, or burgers made with lean mince with added vegetables
  • Trim off any visible fat from meats before cooking
  • Include some vegetarian options such as commercial or homemade lentil or vegetable burgers or mixed vegetable kebabs
  • Offer a range of breads such as wholemeal, multigrain or rye bread in addition to the usual white
  • Add some vegies:
    • Make a crisp garden salad or a simple coleslaw
    • BBQ some onion, pineapple rings or corn on the cob
    • Offer some cut-up salad vegetables such as tomato, lettuce, cucumber or beetroot
  • Provide plenty of icy cold water to drink
  • Serve pieces of fresh fruit or slices of melon for a simple way to finish the BBQ.
