School celebrations

Part of being a health-promoting school is providing opportunities to enjoy foods from the five food groups in different school settings, including during celebrations and special events. The five food groups are:

  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Milk, cheese, yoghurt and alternatives
  • Meat and alternatives
  • Grain (cereal) foods

When hosting school celebrations, aim to provide a range of foods from these groups in interesting ways.

As a school you may decide to offer foods  such as confectionary, chips or icy poles. Offer these foods alongside foods from the five food groups to show children that they are just one part of the festivities and that all foods can be enjoyed and have a place in healthy eating. If asking families to send food from home, provide them with some tasty ideas.

There are ways other than food to make your event stand out. For example, coloured hairspray or fluoro wrist bands.
